- Express Modem Readme

- Module Description
- -----------------
- This module is intended to be used on Powerbooks that have the Express Modem
- installed. It is on no use if you don't have an Express Modem (and shouldn't
- even run). It may or may not work if you are using the Express Modem on a
- desktop model and have hacked the Control Strip. I have not tested it on such a
- set up.
- The main purpose of the module is to display the status of the Express
- Modem. To do this the module will display one of three possible sets of icons to
- indicate the current state of the Express Modem.
-
-
-
- In the first case the modem is both onhook and turned off. In the second
- case the modem software is running but the modem is onhook. In the last case the
- software is running and the modem is also offhook. In addition to displaying the
- above information information, clicking on the module will bring up a popup menu
- that will give you additional information about the Express Modem.
-
- From the popup menu you can also turn the Express Modem software on and off
- and will open the Express Modem Control Panel. Turning the software off is often
- useful in order to conserve power and free up memory. The modem software uses
- approximately 300-400K of memory and when powered up the modem consumes some
- small amount of power. Shutting down the modem software on my system frees up
- 410K for example.
-
- Limitations
- -----------
- There are a couple of things to keep in mind when using the module. First
- shutting down the modem software requires the use of Apple Events. This can only
- be done if the front-most application is capable of handling Apple Events. For
- most applications this isn't a problem, but if you are using an older application
- you may have to switch to the Finder or other Apple Event aware application. The
- second limitation is that you can't turn the modem software off if the modem is
- offhook. Doing so wouldn't be such a good idea since that means that some other
- applicaton is currently using it, but the software is smart enough not to quit
- under such circumstances. One third limitation is that you can't turn the modem
- software on while the Express Modem Control Panel is open. I'm not sure why this
- is, but it shouldn't really matter since if the Control Panel is open you can
- turn the modem on from there.
